Most people know how to distinguish between leaders, and our country has two types.
There are those like former president Emile Lahoud who never subordinated themselves to foreign influence, who knew the truth as it is, and was able to be close to the people without any help from intellectuals, be they liberals or revolutionaries, to understand their concerns.
He was the kind of man who knows how to set boundaries for others, be they friends or enemies, and to slam the table with anger when he or his people were insulted.
Lahoud believed that one must fight for his rights using his own two hands and not by way of others. He knew the extent of his own boundaries and never volunteered for something that is beyond his capabilities.
He did not need anyone to prompt him to tell the truth when necessary or ask for permission from anyone to face down his enemies, never expecting any reward for doing his duty.
Our country is full the second type: opportunists and charlatans who force themselves upon us. They were born to be nothing more than common thieves and warlords.
Those like Lahoud – who are mercilessly pursued by those machines of hatred that are financed by some of the biggest criminals in world – should be preserved in our national memory with love and appreciation for what they have done.
Emile Lahoud, God keep you!
