Damascus, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday received Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and the accompanying delegation, discussing with them developments in Syria.
During the meeting, President al-Assad voiced appreciation on behalf of himself and the Syrian people for Russia’s stances in support of Syria in the face of the vicious attack and takfiri terrorism which is backed by Western, regional and Arab forces, saying that these stances raise hope of drawing a new map for global balance.
For his part, Ryabkov affirmed the firmness of the Russian position on the crisis in Syria based on the need to find a political solution and adhering to international laws that reject the use of force and respect people’s right to create their own future.
Ryabkov noted that the Syrian issue has become a priority for Russia and a pivot of world politics, affirming the need to continue deep and practical consultation and coordination between the two countries’ leaderships.
The meeting was attended by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Fayssal Mikdad, Director of Department for Middle East and North Africa at the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Vershinin, department head Dmitri Dogadkin, director of the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister’s office Konstantin Serednyakov, and Russia’s Ambassador in Damascus Azmat Kulmuhametov.
Ryabkov: Syria’s proofs on terrorists’ use of chemical weapons very important, clear and technical
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Ryabkov, stressed that the proofs presented by Syria on chemical weapons use by the armed terrorist groups on August 21st in Damascus countryside are very important, clear and technical.
At a press conference, Ryabkov pointed out that those proofs do not have any political purpose, adding, “They are numbers, signs and conclusions in the form of chemical equations.”
He noted that the Syrian government handed these proofs to the head of the UN investigation mission Ake Sellstrom before he left Syria.
He expressed Russia’s disappointment as these proofs have not been given adequate attention in spite of their importance, hoping that they would be taken into consideration as they are extremely important.
The Russian official said, “The conclusions which were discussed in New York during the past two days were limited, therefore, we have to see the whole picture and look for clear-cut evidence before coming out with conclusions and indications.”
He stressed that Russia cannot accept one side of the investigation as some parties did to blame the responsibility for what happened in Ghouta on the Syrian government.
Ryabkov asserted that any UN Security Council resolution on Syria must be limited on supporting the work of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) based on the Russian-U.S. agreement in Geneva.
He pointed out that he discussed with the Syrian officials means of implementing the Russian-U.S. agreement and he listened to their assessment of the current events, in addition to discussing means of ending violence and making progress towards the international conference on Syria in Geneva.
He considered the Russian-U.S. agreement as giving room for diplomacy as stressed by several US officials.
Ryabkov said that he met representative of the Syrian opposition inside Syria and stressed that the only way and the genuine solution to the crisis in Syria is the political solution.
He added that the opposition should be ready immediately to send their representatives to Geneva 2 with no preconditions.
Ryabkov said that delaying the date of Geneva conference is due to the problems related to the representation of the opposition which should be comprehensive.
He described the Russian-Syrian relations as deep rooted and promising, adding that the friendship relations between the two peoples are firm and they will not be affected by any “storms.”
