The criticisms of the AKP government’s foreign policy to support armed groups in Syria have now spread even as far an European parliaments, as an MP for the Party of Freedom in the Netherlands has demanded that an investigation be opened against the AKP Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan for “supporting terrorist organisations in Syria.”
Following news of a Dutch citizen of Turkish origin known only as ‘Yılmaz’ fighting for an al-Qaeda-linked group in Syria came out in the news, to topic was brought to the Dutch parliament where questions were asked on the issue. The Defence Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert confirmed that there was a strong possibility that three former soldiers of the Dutch army were now ‘fighting Jihad’ in Syria or in another nation, and that ‘Yılmaz’ had served in the Royal Netherlands Army between 2009 and 2010. Upon this admission, Party of Freedom (PVV) MP Raymond de Roon put forth a motion demanding that the relations of the Dutch government with Turkey be evaluated, asking for a number of questions to be answered by the Dutch Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
De Roon asked for his 11 questions to be answered by the two senior politicians, and amongst the hard questions for the pair, posed:
“Since when have you known that Turkey used its National Intelligence to organise jihadists in Syria? Were you aware that our Patriot missile were sent to Turkey to counter a potential attack from Syria? Despite this knowledge, why did Prime Minister Mark Rutte who set aside time to go to Adana and take photos of the Patriots not want to go to Ankara and make an announcement? Do you agree with the view that while the Patriot mission, which amounts to sponsoring Turkish policy, continues, the Netherlands is supporting Jihadists in Syria?”
On Turkey specifically, de Roon stated that Turkey is playing with fire by providing weapons, money and medical care to throats-cutting jihadists, asking “Do you agree that an international criminal investigation should be opening on the role of Prime Minister Erdoğan and the head of the Turkish intelligence Fidan for supporting jihadist organizations, including the al-Nusra Front, considered terrorist organization by the United Nations?”
