The United States is using terrorist groups operating inside Iraq to replace the county’s current government with one that is US-friendly, a political analyst and a freelance journalist in Malaysia says.
In a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said America’s support for Iraqi authorities against militants from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) largely depends on their ability to quickly form a “new government.”
“The Obama administration is essentially using what’s going on in Iraq now to unseat Prime Minister Maliki who they are more uncomfortable with than before, primarily because he’s moved closer to Damascus and Tehran,” said Nile Bowie.
“They no longer want Maliki in power and they’re using this situation to pressure Maliki into stepping down and bringing someone who’s more friendly to their interests,” Bowie told Press TV on Wednesday.
Essentially they’re saying to him either you step down or you have to face ISIL on your own which is incredibly dubious and manipulative since the United States “contributed in so many ways to the rise of these groups,” he added.
A recent report shows that ISIL militants were trained by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Jordan more than two years ago. The report said that the militants were initially trained at the time as part of covert aids to the Takfiri militants operating inside Syria.
On June 10, the ISIL militants took control of Mosul, the capital of Iraq’s Nineveh Province, which was followed by the fall of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people have been forced out of their homes since the attacks.
