The president of autonomous Kurdish region, Massoud Barzani, said that the division of Iraq is no longer possible to stop, noting that the United States will not stand against it.
In an interview with German newspaper Bild am Sonntag said that the disintegration of Iraq is no longer possible to stop, adding, "We have here Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite identity and a fourth Christian, but we do not have an Iraqi identity.”
“Kurdistan Parliament is trying to start the procedure for the referendum and I believe that International community including United States won’t be against us,” said Barzani.
He also added that independence is a right of every nation.
“Before becoming independent, we will ask our people,” stated Barzani.
He described the current situation in Iraq as "a threat" due to the progress of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) and the “wrong policy” of the government in Baghdad.
Earlier on Thursday, the head of Kurdistan Region called on Kurdistan Parliament while attending a hearing at his request, to pave the way for legal and constitutional ground for the referendum on the independence of the citizens of the region.
Meanwhile, Barzani pointed out that the relationship between Kurdistan and Turkey have improved during the past ten years dramatically, and is now in a very good relationship, noting that Turkey can be described as a "good neighbor”.
