Obama just made things much, much worse in the Ukraine - now Russia is ready for war

The saker

Something absolutely huge has just happened in Russia: the Russian Council of the Federation, the equivalent of the US Senate, has just UNANIMOUSLY  passed a resolution allowing Putin to use Russian armed forces in the Ukraine, something the Duma had requested earlier.  Before the vote took place, Russian senators said that Obama had threatened Russia, insulted the Russian people and that they demanded that Putin recall the Russian ambassador to the USA.  I have never seen such a level of outrage and even rage in Russia as right now.

I hope and pray that Obama, and his advisers, stop and think carefully about their next step because make no mistake about that RUSSIA IS READY FOR WAR.

Now, the resolution of the Council of the Federation does not, repeat, NOT, mean that Russian forces will move into the Ukraine.  Key Russian politicians have already spoken out and clarified that all this did was give the authority to Putin to use the armed forces, but that he was free to decide on whether this was needed or not.

Yet, this is a warning which should not be taken lightly.  The way I see it, it not only means that Russia will act to protect Crimea, but that there is a real possibility that Russia could even use its armed forces elsewhere in the Ukraine and this is a huge development.

In the past days I have listened to many Russian experts, lots of talkshows, political statements, etc. and I was amazed by the fact that nobody even suggested that Russia should intervene militarily.  Everybody agreed that Russia should support the Russian speakers in the Ukraine politically, financially, and morally.  But nobody mentioned the use of force.  So what happened since?

1) some kind of attack on Crimea overnight
and
2) Obama's absolutely imbecile and reckless threats against Russia

And this combination really set things off.  Now, every single political party in the Council of the Federation and every single representative have voted to allow the use of Russian armed force.  That would be the equivalent of the US President getting each member of the House and the Senate to vote to allow him to wage war.

I need to make something else clear here: no amounts of threats will stop the Kremlin now, all that will achieve is to get even more of the public reaction of support for Putin.  And if some wannabe Napoleon or Hitler decided to try to use military forces against Russia the latter will go to war, no matter who is standing against it.

The USA and the EU have to realize that they dangerously overplayed their hand in the Ukraine: they have used neo-Nazis to overthrow a totally corrupt and incompetent President, but a legitimate one, in the process they have wrecked the Ukrainian state apparatus, by allowing so much wanton violence and racist slogans they have totally freaked out the eastern and southern Ukraine, and by either conducting or allowing an attack on Crimea they have threatened the Russian population and the Black Sea Fleet.  That is yet another absolute and TOTAL DISASTER of the Obama Presidency.  This man is as dishonest, as he is mediocre, arrogant and reckless and I hope and pray that the US Joint Chiefs are going to have a "frank exchange of views" with him as soon as possible.  In an ideal world, the Congress should have impeached that despicable loser, but since they are even worse then him, it is for the JCS to act.

The Russians are united, they are really angry and they know that they have the military strength to defend their country and their people in the near abroad.  I don't recommend anybody doubt their resolve because if Russia is attacked its response will be devastating: think 08.08.08 but on a vast scale.

I think that a disaster can, and will, be avoided.  I even hope that the Russian military will not move into the Ukraine, but the US has to rein in both the insurgency government and the Fascists in the streets and tell them all to "cool it".  The next necessary step is to spot the nationalists from trying to seize further buildings in the east and southern Ukraine.  Last, but not least, the USA and Russia should get together to strike some deal which would allow the Ukraine to formally survive as a unitary state, but make it a de-facto confederation with a purely symbolic presidency.

The leaders of the USA and the EU have to now understand that they are playing with fire and that this is not a "Ukrainian" problem: now they themselves are at risk of ending up in a war against Russia, possibly a nuclear one.  And even if they never admit to that publicly, they need to at least have to courage to admit to themselves that they themselves created that situation and that the responsibility for it is fully theirs.

DR. ASSAD BIDS FOND FAREWELL TO SYRIA’S MOST IMPORTANT COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE AGENT; NEWS AND COMMENTARY

Good bye Bobby Ford. Adieu Sarkozy. Ta ta, Hillary. Khodahafez, Bandar. Toodleydoo Zapatero.Aufwiedersehen Westerwelle. Sayonara Berlusconi. Ma’ Al-Salaama Haaj Maari’.

Ford 2 years ago: Assad leaving in 3 months

DR. ASSAD WEEPS TEARS OF SADNESS AT THE DEPARTURE OF SYRIA’S MOST LAURELED UNINTENTIONAL SPY.  ROBERT FORD. REGALED WITH ENCOMIA FROM FORMER DIRECTOR OF GENERAL INTELLIGENCE AND PRESENT NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR, GENERAL ALI MAMLOUK:“No man or ape has been as effective in ridding Syria of spies, saboteurs, malcontents and malingerers than Bobby Ford.  What will we do without him?”
And so we, too, bid adieu to the 2011 winner of the Syrian Perspective EGON KRENZ/MARKUS WOLF STASI PRIZE FOR SERVICE TO THE SYRIAN SECURITY ESTABLISHMENT. Ford’s ardent defenses of traitors and  unannounced visits to Syrian dissidents in cities like Damascus, Homs and Hama, brought out the vermin from these towns and enabled Syrian agencies to record their identities and stop them from wreaking more havoc.  It was Ford’s meetings with them – his focused attention on their boo-hoo-hooing – that exposed the rats to the ever-watchful eyes of the counter-intelligence and security services.  His empty promises of helping them to rid Syria of a progressive secular government with a popular president are still the fodder of comic interludes in the lives of Syria’s normally taciturn security operatives.
General Mamlouk has fought hard to keep Ford in Damascus as U.S. ambassador saying: “Without Ford’s visits to these malcontents and his tireless efforts to make them easy prey will only make us work even harder now.”  He went on to say:  “It is true his diplomatic technique as U.S. ambassador to Damascus was somewhat preternatural, at best, but, he did more good for our government than Iran and Russia combined. We demand his reappointment!”
Robert Ford, seen here panhandling after losing his job at Foggy Bottom, mostly strolls the streets of Georgetown looking for sex jihadists.
Unfotunately for General Mamlouk, Bobby Ford and Bandar Bush (the Ape) are committed to a venture capital investment in Ahmad Jarba’s new franchise: PALMYRA PIMPS PRODUCTIONS AND PROMOTIONS LTD.  They will be very busy recruiting sex jihadists “of every kind and style and for every war.”
WE TOO AT SYRPER WANT TO EXPRESS OUR FEELINGS OF GRATITUDE TO THIS WAR CRIMINAL.  NOTHING CAN SUM IT UP LIKE THIS:

So, the Brits think they can be rid of Assad or Al-Qaeda – but not both. This article is interesting in that it shows the English haven’t changed one bit even though they have been known to leave nuclear secrets on benches in parks:
“Another Aussie” sends this article that should have every Syrian missile operator champing at the bit to fire a Scud-B at the Golan Heights.  The Rothschilds?

The European Saker - in his own words:Over the past couple of hours it was it was interesting to observe the reactions to the Russian decision to be read to use military force in the Ukraine.  Let's take them one by one

Obama and Kerry: frankly, I did not expect much, by I still was baffled by how out of touch the White House is with the real world.  To deter Putin from using armed force, the White House decided to threaten him boycott  the next G8 summit in Russia.  Boo hoo!!  I am sure that Putin is now terrified.  Not.  Listening to the Idiot in Chief and his Secretary of State I truly marveled that this still threw the full political weight and credibility of the USA behind a government which even Iatseniuk himself called a "kamikaze government'. Anybody with an IQ at or above room temperature understands that this so called "Ukrainian government" is bound to fail if only because it literally has no money to do *anything*.  And yet, the boneheads in Washington are totally backing this quasi-dead regime.

The Ukrainian military: I am sure that you have heard that the Ukrainian military is now on maximal alert and is read to repel any Russian aggression.  Guys, this is laughable.  There IS NO UKRAINIAN MILITARY.  There is a lot of old hardware lying around, there are a number of units with basically zero training and there are a few units of higher combat readiness.  Do you know what that list is called in military terms? It's called *TARGETS*. I also suspect that if the western politicians and a few Ukie crackpots speak about the Ukrainian armed forces, the officers there, and even the soldiers, fully realize that they are just targets. Hence the wise decision of the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, to quickly switch sides even before getting back home (it is in eastern the Mediterranean according to the latest reports).  I suppose you all know that the notion of the Ukies developing their own nuclear weapons is laughable, so I will not bother dwelling on it now.

Yulia and Klichko: As I suspected from her appearance on the Maidan, Yulia clearly lost it and her latest statement about the crisis just proves to me that she is "gone fishing".  In contrast, however, and to be great surprise, it was Klichko who came out with the sanest proposal: he wants to create a special commission in Kiev tasked with negotiating a peaceful resolution of the current crisis between Kiev and Moscow.  Unlike Yulia's hysterical nonsense, Kichko's statement contained no grandstanding or lyrical appeals.  It was all business-like and pragmatic.  Well, who knows, maybe the man can get something done since  I am quite sure that as long as the Ukies do not use force in the east or south the Russians will stay on high alert, but on their side of the border.

That's it for this short update.  Later today I hope to have the time to post a somewhat more analytic look at the recent developments.

Cheers,

        Published Friday, February 28, 2014

Israel, with its strike on a Hezbollah position on the Lebanese border with Syria on Monday, was trying to test the possibility of altering the rules of engagement. Hezbollah’s statement in response carried a stern and sharp warning. So is it in Israel’s interests to provide a pretext for a war whose outcome it cannot predict?

Since August 15, 2006, the day the war on Lebanon that year came to a halt, the Resistance began restoring, developing, and expanding its military capabilities in both quality and quantity. The Resistance’s rearming was so successful that Israel was eventually forced to admit that Hezbollah possessed more than 100,000 rockets that can hit any target in Israel. This is part of a bigger missile arsenal in the region directed at the Jewish State, to the tune of 170,000 rockets, as Israel estimates.

From day one, Tel Aviv has declared that it would not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its capabilities and restore them to their pre-war levels – meaning that it was not going to allow for its rocket arsenal of approximately 12,000 rockets be replenished. This was a red line that Israel repeatedly stated it would not allow to be crossed. Nevertheless, Hezbollah’s capabilities grew dramatically, along with its ability to hit targets with accuracy, precision, and destructive force.

Despite this, Israel did not launch any military attacks on Syria or Hezbollah, even though Israel engaged in brinkmanship in this regard, through the U.S. administration, which put immense pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to compel him to stop supplying and letting weapons into Lebanon to arm Hezbollah. However, the resilience Assad has shown, and the Resistance’s serious willingness to respond to any Israeli attempt to thwart its bid to shore up its capabilities, has forced Israel to show some restraint.

As the years passed, the Resistance’s capabilities grew bigger and bigger. In the meantime, Tel Aviv continued to count Hezbollah’s rockets, issuing periodical reports on their number, type, accuracy, range, and payload. There was much clamoring in the media, political circles, and intelligence community in Israel, but was met with deaf ears in Haret Hreik and Damascus.

With the start of the crisis in Syria, the Israelis wagered on achieving more than Tel Aviv had ever hoped for before, that is not only to force Assad to stop supplying weapons to Hezbollah, but also topple Assad’s regime altogether and produce a new anti-Resistance regime in Syria.

This Israeli wager reached a peak when, on January 2, 2012, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, backed by military intelligence assessments, predicted that the Syrian regime would collapse “within weeks.” This is while the assessment of the rare pessimists in the Israeli intelligence community was that the regime would last no more than a few months. But this wager fell through after the regime was able to halt its downward spiral. This meant that Tel Aviv had to reexamine its options.

Israel estimated that the attack on the Syrian state has greatly exhausted it, and that the Syrian army, despite its steadfastness and the fact it that went on the offensive against its opponents, is also exhausted and preoccupied with the fight against the various factions of the armed opposition throughout Syrian territory. In light of this assessment, Tel Aviv decided to seek to prevent the passage of specific types of weapons to Hezbollah by means of direct military strikes. Israel believes what it feared before is now unlikely in light of the new reality on the ground.

The series of Israeli strikes inside Syrian territory began on January 31, 2013. Limited strikes continued after that, in a way that did not put Israel’s enemies into a corner and force them to respond, but that at the same time, gave Israel the chance to eliminate whatever targets it can.

This remained confined to Syrian territory, bearing in mind that Israel’s interest was clearly to target positions in Lebanon, the location of the actual threat. However, Israel knew in advance that there would be a violent response to that, as emphasized by Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of Hezbollah, in February 2013. All this compelled Tel Aviv to remain vigilant, yet refrain from carrying out direct military strikes in Lebanon.

Last Monday’s raid signified that there was a new Israeli decision pushing in favor of taking action to test whether what has been done in Syria can be replicated in Lebanon – in the sense of carrying out limited and specific strikes that Israel does not confirm officially, and that Hezbollah can ignore to avoid embarrassment, as if nothing had happened.

In the first two days following the strike, there was much fanfare in the attitudes, analyses, and press coverage on the Israeli side. It was claimed that Israel struck and that Hezbollah ignored what happened and remained silent, and even that Hezbollah accepted to say that the strike had taken place in Syrian territory. However, a statement issued by Hezbollah soon brought with it a decisive response that thwarted Israel’s new strategy.

Israel has correctly determined that Hezbollah is currently fighting on two fronts, in Syria and Lebanon, and has no interest in opening a third one with Israel. However, Hezbollah at the same time cannot allow Israel to achieve what armed Syrian groups and their other opponents have failed to accomplish.

Nonetheless, the flip side of this, that Israel and others are ignoring, is that Israel also has no interest in provoking a party that has formidable military capabilities. What we are seeing now is a tug of war. There is an Israeli attempt to take advantage of the attack on the resistance axis in Syria and Lebanon – which includes direct combat, bombings, and political and media campaigns. It is an attempt to impose a new equation.

Hezbollah’s response and decision were to raise a yellow card. The ball may now be in Israel’s court, so will Israel understand what it means for Hezbollah to raise a yellow card? Will it be more prudent so as not to provoke a red card?

Medvedev: Yanukovych Still Legitimate Ukraine President

        ِAl-manar

Ukraine's president Viktor Yanukovych is still the legitimate head of state of the country even if his authority is "negligible", Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Monday.
        medvedev

Medvedev added that Russia does not recognize the new authorities who took power in Kiev after the overthrow of Yanukovych, saying they had violated the constitution.

In a posting on his Facebook page, Medvedev did not directly refer to the parliament approval won by President Vladimir Putin at the weekend to send Russian troops onto Ukrainian territory amid the standoff in Crimea. "Yes, the authority of president Yanukovych is practically negligible but this does not cancel out the fact that according to the constitution of Ukraine he is still the legitimate head of state," Medvedev said.

Russia has given sanctuary to Yanukovych, who on Friday emerged for the first time to give a news conference in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don. Medvedev said that Russia is ready to develop "multi-faceted, respectful relations with brotherly Ukraine" -- but not with the authorities who replaced Yanukovych.

"Ukraine is not for us the group of people who shed blood... and took power in violation of the constitution and other laws of their state.""It is the entire country. A varied group of people. Ukrainians, Russians, Tatars, Jews. Different communities, living in harmony," he added.

The prime minister said that if Yanukovych is guilty of crimes then a procedure of impeachment should have been started against him in Ukraine. "Everything else is just arbitrary. A seizure of power. And meaning that this new order will be very unstable. It will end in a new takeover. With new blood," he warned. "Russia needs a strong and stable Ukraine. A predictable and economically capable partner. "And not a poor relation, constantly standing with an outstretched hand," he said.

Fighting in the Damascus district of Yarmouk have interrupted aid distribution to thousands of besieged Palestinian refugees, the United Nations said on Monday.

The clashes broke out on Sunday in Yarmouk, where 20,000 people have been trapped for months by Syria's civil war and are dependent on humanitarian supplies delivered by UNRWA, the UN agency which supports Palestinian refugees.

A Palestinian group that supports President Bashar al-Assad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), blamed the fighting on al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

"Terrorist groups from the Nusra Front and their takfiri brothers... infiltrated Yarmouk Camp," Hussam Arafat, a PFLP leader said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that the jihadist fighters have occupied a square in the center of the camp and that their presence threatens humanitarian efforts.

Al-Nusra confirmed that it has entered the camp. The fighting broke a fragile truce that has been in place since February 11 when non-Palestinian fighters agreed to leave the camp to allow aid workers to delivers crucial supplies.

UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness said the UN agency was unable to distribute food parcels in Yarmouk on Sunday and called on all sides in the conflict to immediately allow the resumption of the aid operation.

"UNRWA remains deeply concerned about the desperate humanitarian situation in Yarmouk and the fact that increasing tensions and resort to armed force have disrupted its efforts to alleviate the desperate plight of civilians," he said.

Yarmouk is one of several besieged districts in Damascus and other cities. Most areas have been cut off by government forces who are trying to box in the rebels.

But insurgents are also surrounding pro-government towns in the northern province of Aleppo.

Local ceasefires in Yarmouk and other Damascus suburbs, as well as the central city of Homs, have allowed some civilians to escape and limited amounts of food to be taken in, but the deals are fragile and in some cases the sieges have resumed.

The United Nations Security Council called last month for the immediate lifting of all the sieges and demanded all sides allow access for humanitarian aid.

Putin Builds up Armor near Crimea

        Local Editor

Russian tanks deployed in CrimeaUkraine said Russia was building up armored vehicles on its side of a narrow stretch of water near the Ukrainian region of Crimea after President Vladimir Putin said he had the right to enter into his neighbor's territory, prompting a sell-off in Russian assets, World Bulletin website reported.

Ukraine mobilized for war on Sunday and Washington threatened to isolate Russia economically after Putin's declaration, provoking Moscow's biggest confrontation with the West since the Cold War.

The Russian central bank raised its key lending rate 1.5 percentage points after the rouble fell 2.5 percent to an all-time against the dollar at the opening of exchange trading on Monday, while the MICEX index of Moscow stocks tumbled 10 percent to 1,294 points. Russian gas monopoly Gazprom , which supplies Europe through Ukraine, was down more than 13 percent.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, head of a pro-Western government that took power when former president Viktor Yanukovich, a Russian ally, left capital on Feb. 21 after three months of street protests against his rule, said Putin had effectively declared war on his country.

A Ukrainian border guard spokesman said on Monday that Russian ships had been moving in and around the Crimean port city of Sevastopol, where the Russian Black Sea Fleet has a base, and that Russian forces had blocked mobile telephone services in some parts of Crimea.

He said the build-up of Russian armor was near a ferry port on the Russian side of what is known as the Kerch Strait, which separates the eastern edge of the Crimea peninsula and the western edge of the Taman Peninsula.

The strait is 4.5 km (2.8 miles) wide at its narrowest point and up to 18 meters (59 feet) deep.

The border guard spokesman did not say how many armored vehicles had gathered in Russian territory, opposite the city of Kerch on the Ukrainian side of the strait.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian Defence Ministry.

Eurasian Union nightmare for US and Europe

        Published Monday, March 3, 2014
Vladimir Putin's political resilience in the Middle East bolstered by the creation of the Eurasian Union, similar to the European Union, is a nightmare for the Americans and Europeans. And through Ukraine's revolutionary coup, America and the EU have decided to intervene in the emergence of a union made up of former Soviet republics under Russia's leadership.
This time, Kiev's "revolution" did not have a color or even a common slogan. There were no special scarves for the "revolutionaries" and food and drinks were not delivered to the tents. The "revolutionary" masses were not trained on peacefully toppling the regime. It was mostly made up of extremist right wing thugs from the Orange Revolution of 2004.
Europe and the US are well aware that "peaceful protests" would not have achieved their goals this time and the 2004 experience could not be repeated successfully. They are both bankrupt and running out of time, with spring just around the corner. But this year, it is a Russian spring that both economically sick continents are allergic to.

This painful allergic reaction is due to the expected launch of Russian President Vladimir Putin's most ambitious regional project. It entails the creation of the Eurasian Union, along the lines of the EU, which would include Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine, in addition to Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. The huge project's first agreement is expected this spring and will be launched officially on the first day of 2015.
The idea of bringing together the European and Asian countries of the former Soviet Union in a union has been Putin's main ambition since taking power. It will include common economic, political, and security agreements, the guarantee of common interests, and the development of certain sectors. It has also been welcomed by most of the concerned countries. In its first inception, the union began in 2010 with a core group of countries - Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus - and in 2012 it developed into a unified economic zone.
The upcoming Eurasian project under Russia's leadership will, of course, be one of the worst nightmares for the EU. It will mean the appearance of a strong entity, which will be able to assert itself on two continents and on the international scene. For the United States, the project will also threaten its interests in the region and will be a return of its “red” nightmare from the Cold War. Thus, in the midst of economic failure and political retreat, the EU and the US found themselves unable to stop the advance of an economically vigorous Eurasian project, which will be superior in terms of energy, security, and culture. So they did what they do best, encouraging chaos and carrying out coups. Ukraine is one of the countries whose entry to the Eurasian Union is feared most, with its various ethnicities, political divisions, and being the historical scene of compromise between the West and Russia. Thus, the US and the EU publically supported the recent coup. Joining the EU was the main demand of the movement in Kiev this time around. For "revolutionary necessity," the calls for democracy, removing the dictatorial regime, and stopping Russia's control were later added to the list of demands.
        Western political and media campaigns

The details of the signing of the "Eurasian Union" agreement was absent from most analysis in the US, France, and the UK. Media campaigns focused on the promises of the revolution, "Ukrainian police repression against the demonstrators,""the corruption of the Ukrainian dictator," and "the Ukranian regime's dependence on Russia." Once more, the West reduced all of Ukraine to Kiev and the 45 million inhabitants of the country to the demonstrators in Maidan. None of the supporters of the Ukrainian "revolution" were concerned that the opposition does not have an alternative political project and did not present a clear plan for the leadership of the country in the future.
When Russia decided to defend Russian citizens and Russian speakers and its interests in Crimea, as announced by its officials, western political and media campaigns began playing the tune of "civil war" and the threat of "division,""Putin's violation of international law," and his "aggression against Ukrainian sovereignty." Very few articles indicated the fact that many Ukrainians support special relations with Russia and do not believe they are represented by the new government. Some even welcome a Russian military intervention in the country. A few cameras could not ignore the banners hung in Simferopol and Sevastopol, which said, "Where we are, Russia exists," and "Russia is the graveyard of bad ideas. It cannot be defeated."
Those who launched the coup campaign in Ukraine are those who have the most to lose from the Eurasian project. They neglected the coup's outcome and that an illegitimate and unelected government is now in power, made up of extreme right-wing groups, and which does not represent the majority of Ukrainians. More seriously, the new Ukrainian government does not have an economic or political program on how to lead the country in the future. Some journalists indicated that new Ukrainians officials requested 35 billion US dollars from their allies to avert an economic collapse this year, after Russia suspended its enormous aid to the country. This will be a new dilemma for the already faltering EU.
The US and EU sounded the alarms about Russian actions in Crimea and called for immediate international intervention to avert "civil war and division." However, the region has not witnessed an ethnic or communal conflict in 25 years. Politically, the EU and the US quickly called for international mediation to reach an agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Russia, on the other hand, admitted that it has military and civil interests in Crimea and announced its intention to "defend the region" by all appropriate means. The 90 minute phone conversation between Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama did not change any of those facts.

Emigration the latest threat to right of return for Palestinians

"Yes to emigration from Lebanon" was a phrase that sounded the alarms for Palestinian faction officials. The calls for mass emigration from Lebanon will ultimately "liquidate the right of return." So how are factions dealing with this issue?
A few months ago, a campaign was launched in Palestinian refugee camps calling for mass emigration from Lebanon. The campaign organizers were exploiting the poor living situation of Palestinian refugees in the country for additional impetus. They took advantage of the deprivation of Palestinians from their social and human rights to impart legitimacy on their campaign.
Palestinians in Lebanon are denied their most basic human and social rights. They are prohibited from working in 72 occupations, as well as from owning real estate. These appalling conditions allowed the campaign to reach every sector in the camps and find fertile ground in young people facing all sorts of hardships.
According to statistics, two new coffee shops filled with unemployed young men are opening every month. Tyre-based Burj al-Shamali camp alone has 23 such establishments.
These reasons, and the hope for a better life outside Lebanon, encouraged some young people to participate heavily in the campaign's sit-ins and demonstrations. At the beginning, Palestinian faction officials did not take the calls seriously. Many believed it would be just another event on Facebook, which would fizzle out soon.
However, after seeing the magnitude of participation in demonstrations, which took place in the camps of North Lebanon and in Ain al-Hilweh [in Saida], faction officials began sounding the alarm. They began asking questions about who is behind the campaign and who funds it? Who are the young men in charge? Who encourages young people to emigrate?

All fingers are pointing to Mohammed Dahlan and his supporters in Lebanon. Palestinian factions, especially Fatah and the Palestinian embassy, started to mobilize their members to confront the campaign. They categorically and completely rejected the calls for emigration.
You Stone Israelis, I will stone our Palestinian Leaders
"This will contribute to eliminating the right of return," a Fatah official told Al-Akhbar. The statement might seem "hollow" at first glance. Faction officials are used to repeating it at every occasion. However, at this particular time, the right of return is in real danger, especially in light of the leaks from US Secretary of State John Kerry's plan to put an end to the refugee issue.

"Kerry proposed a solution for the refugee issue in Lebanon and Syria," a Palestinian embassy source explained. "It is in the form of monetary compensation for refugees to leave the country or the implantation of whoever chooses to remain. As for Palestinians in the Gulf, they will be resettled in the countries where they live, while Palestinians in Europe will carry the nationality of the countries where they are."
Due to the threat this campaign poses to the right of return, Palestinian factions decided on a strong confrontation, in a similar manner and through young people also. Next Thursday, the factions will be holding a press conference at the Press Syndicate to declare the launching of a campaign called "Shababona" [our youth].
The counter-campaign will be a coalition of Palestinian youth and student organizations in Lebanon to raise awareness among young people, insisting on the right of return and rejecting mass emigration from the camps.
"Individuals have the right to a better life. They also have the right to think about leaving the country and go anywhere that treats them better," a senior official in the Coalition of Palestinian Forces said. "We cannot oppose individual immigration. But if there is a clear call for mass emigration from the camps, this means there are Palestinian sides aiding [Kerry] to implement his plan to kill the refugee issue."
Along with the youth counter campaign, Palestinian faction officials will be doing their political work. A few weeks ago, they held a meeting at the Palestinian embassy. The first point on the agenda was how to confront the campaign calling for emigration from Lebanon. Meeting participants agreed to expand their work on various levels.
Politically, they decided to "communicate with Lebanese state officials to improve the situation of refugees in the camps and adopt their social rights, because the dire situation contributes to the spread of such ideas," according to an official in the coalition. "We are waiting for the government to be ratified to introduce our demands, since the Lebanese state shares the responsibility for the situation."
The factions will also try to reduce Dahlan's influence on Palestinian camps in Lebanon. "The projects launched by his his wife Jalila Dahlan and the money spent on development projects in the camps contributed to luring young Palestinians," according to an official in the Coalition of Palestinian Forces. "Just like they attracted young Palestinians through paying symbolic sums of money in the recently formed youth gatherings, we will also try to find jobs for these young people, so they won't have to rely on Dahlan's money."

        Published Monday, March 3, 2014
Over the past month, the official Syrian flag – as opposed to the rebel flag – has been hoisted more than once in the rebel-controlled governorate of al-Raqqa in northern Syria. Nearly one year ago, militants from al-Qaeda-linked group al-Nusra Front took down the Syrian flag, and declared al-Raqqa a “liberated” city. Today, there are signs on the horizon that the government intends to make a comeback in al-Raqqa.
When he heard knocks on the door early last month, Maamoun did not expect to find Syrian army officers and conscripts seeking refuge in his home that night. They stayed with him for a few days, after escaping from a prison run by the Islamic movement of Ahrar al-Sham during the fighting with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Speaking to Al-Akhbar, Maamoun recounted how he sought to find a way to get the officers and soldiers, who numbered around 15, out of the “Islamic State of al-Raqqa.” He said, “It was a gamble, and certain death awaited us had we been discovered.”
He continued, “I thought about using burkas, but it wasn’t a good idea after recent attacks against ISIS checkpoints in the city had involved people disguised in burkas. It was better to transport them in a truck outside the governorate’s boundaries.”

The truck was filled with bags of used garments, which the officers and soldiers hid under. The truck was able to cross all the checkpoints without being searched thanks to Maamoun’s acquaintances and because the driver was known to the militants manning them. The truck eventually arrived to Syrian army checkpoints, and the soldiers made it back to their homes unharmed.
        Cells of the Syrian Flag
Maamoun, until recently, was one of the rebels who benefited from the fall of al-Raqqa and the war. He reaped a lot of spoils without staining his hands with the blood of Syrians, “just their money.” Now he is a national hero, and keeps in his phone’s address book the numbers of many senior Syrian army officers, including officers in the Syrian Republican Guard.
Together with around thirty other young men, he founded cells called Cells of the Syrian Flag, which undertake secret non-violent activities “with a zero margin of error,” according to Maamoun. Maamoun said, “We raised the Syrian flag over the Housing and Development Agency building, the grain silos, and the sugar mill in coordination with the leadership of the 17th Division, and also over the minarets of Uys al-Qarni shrine near the headquarters of al-Nusra Front and al-Muntaser Billah Brigade, and in al-Shammas Square in the center of the city.”
Graffiti also spread in various parts of the city, with messages affirming that the Syrian government would soon liberate the city. Maamoun’s group has also been coordinating with a faction known as the Syrian Arab Army Supporters in al-Raqqa.
The Syrian Arab Army Supporters Brigade
In Damascus, a boot camp was established for the Syrian Arab Army Supporters, mainly consisting of volunteers from Raqqa numbering around 450. Most of the volunteers are members of loyalist youth groups, which have been active throughout the crisis in the city, in addition to members of the National Defense Forces who fled to Damascus and Latakia after al-Raqqa fell to the rebels.
Jassem al-Ali spends his time between Marja Square in downtown Damascus and his home in Nahr Aisha in the capital’s countryside. He agreed to talk to Al-Akhbar after his training, to share what he called “optimistic stories.” He said, “The training has been continuing for months; we will enter al-Raqqa very soon. Countless youths have been flocking to the training camp since the city fell.”
The Syrian government has rented homes for its supporters from al-Raqqa in the Dummar projects, Sahnaya, and Nahr Aisha, and for others, hotel rooms in the city. Salaries paid to members of the brigades go as high up as 25 thousand Syrian pounds a month, roughly $170 US dollars.
        Liberation scenarios

Any large-scale fighting in the city of al-Raqqa will mean its destruction. With its small residential neighborhoods, the city will not be able to survive war for more than ten hours, while reconstruction would take years to finish.
This is the opinion of al-Raqqa lawyer and former MP Ismail Hajjo, who has been helping al-Raqqa residents who fled the city. Hajjo, who is also a member in the political bureau of the Syrian communist party, said that al-Raqqa is not a priority for the Syrian army at present since it is engaged in more important battles for the time being.
However, the suffering of civilians in al-Raqqa for almost a year now requires intervention to put an end to it. For this reason, according to Hajjo, “there are two scenarios in place for retaking the city of al-Raqqa: First, the Syrian army would intervene and storm the city, which has a high cost that al-Raqqa and its people cannot bear. Or second: Take advantage of the awakened patriotism and the work of patriots in al-Raqqa, and begin coordination between them and the Syrian army so that the city can be retaken by its people with minimal losses.”
        Pre-emptive strike
Meanwhile, opposition forces that have been pushed back by ISIS are now regrouping, with the formation of the so-called National Interim Commission in the al-Raqqa Governorate, on the back of growing loyalist activity in the city, and a feeling that ISIS could suddenly lose control of al-Raqqa. The commission, which was formed a few days ago, declared in a statement that it is comprised of “civilians, combatants, and revolutionary forces,” with their goal being uniting all factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) under the name of al-Raqqa Revolutionaries Brigade.
The commission consists of representatives of the Kurdish National Council, Kurdish independents in al-Raqqa, Turkmen factions in the governorate, youths supportive of the rebels, and the local council in the governorate of al-Raqqa. The commission pledged to liberate al-Raqqa from “tyrannical forces” and establish a judicial body to look into violations against civilians, a civil police force to keep the order, and a fund for financial support, in addition to administrative bodies to run the governorate after “liberation.”
The “military wing” of the commission has already started operating on the ground, attacking patrols and militants affiliated to ISIS throughout al-Raqqa.
In the meantime, ISIS has begun its own preparations for a possible confrontation with its opponents in the Syrian opposition. ISIS has brought in reinforcements from the Aleppo countryside, and bolstered its checkpoints along the governorate entrances, especially after the assassination of one of its military commanders - Abu Bakr al-Tunisi - outside the Hospital of Modern Medicine.
A race may be afoot between various forces vying for control of al-Raqqa. Either the Syrian government will retake control of all centers of all Syrian governorates, or al-Raqqa will fall again into the hands of those who first took it from the Syrian army, which are the factions that are today enemies of ISIS. The latter, however, who are holed up in the city of Raqqa and its surrounding countryside, might find it unacceptable to abandon one of its last remaining strongholds following its successive defeats in the countryside of Aleppo and in Deir al-Zour.

The United States suspended military cooperation with Russia over the latest developments in Ukraine, as Secretary of State John Kerry headed to Kiev.

"We have, in light of recent events in Ukraine, put on hold all military-to-military engagements between the United States and Russia," Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement Monday.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby
The suspension of the post-Cold War cooperation covers exercises, bilateral meetings, port visits and planning conferences, Kirby added.

Kirby stressed that the suspended system had been "developed over the past few years to increase transparency, build understanding, and reduce the risk of military miscalculation".

The crisis now threatens to blow up into the biggest test for global diplomacy -- and relations between Moscow and the West -- since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Meanwhile, the pro-Western interim officials are to meet Kerry, who will reaffirm the United States' strong support for Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity", the US State Department said.

NATO is also to hold an urgent meeting on Tuesday at Poland's request in order to discuss the current crisis in Ukraine.

President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday received a delegation
President Assad from the Jordanian Foreign Affairs Council for Regulating Popular Diplomacy, headed by Nahedd Hatar.

During the meeting, President al-Assad affirmed the importance of popular delegations which encompass intellectual elites and popular demographics in creating a popular movement on the Arab arena, which is essential for confronting plots targeting the region's people.

President al-Assad asserted that despite the aggressive war targeting them, the Syrian people will always stand alongside their brethren in Jordan and support their struggle to preserve the Jordanian national identity and state.

He reiterated Syria's rejection of the plots in the region that seek to consecrate Israel as a Jewish state, which is the goal of the plan of US State Secretary John Kerry that involves removing the Arab people of Palestine and liquidating the Palestinian cause at the expense of Palestine and Jordan.

For their part, the Council members said that Syria's steadfastness is an essential cornerstone for foiling the conspiracy targeting Arab states, because what the Syrian people are facing is a prelude for realizing western projects in the region, including the project of finding a replacement homeland for the Palestinians and terminating their right to return.

The members said that the goal of the Council is to rally Arab public opinion against terrorism, not just in Syria, but across the region, stressing that the Jordanian people will never accept any infringement upon Syria and its course.

Shaaban: Israel Undercovers Gunmen in Syria

        Local Editor
Syria: media advisor of President Bashar al-Assad, Bouthaina ShaabanMedia advisor of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Bouthaina Shaaban, said Monday that Damascus has obtained information about Zionist undercover of gunmen in Syria, adding that even Zionist officers are supervising the battles on Syrian ground.

Speaking to Al-Mayadeen TV, Shaaban expressed beliefs that the Zionist entity is using weapon convoys as an excuse to strike over Syrian and Lebanese territories.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad himself also told an Argentinean newspaper a few months ago that the so-called 'Israel' is assisting the militants fighting in Syria.

“Israel is directly supporting the terrorist groups in two ways,” he stated.

“Firstly it gives them logistical support, and it also tells them what sites to attack and how to attack them," Assad said.

        Ashraf Rifi takes on Al-Akhbar

        Published Tuesday, March 4, 2014
An opinion piece published by Al-Akhbar's editor-in-chief Ibrahim al-Amin Monday chastising Lebanon's president for standing against Hezbollah has triggered a row with Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi.
Rifi, the former head of Lebanon's Internal Security Forces (ISF), and who is closely aligned with the Saudi-backed March 14 Movement, called Monday night on the state prosecutor "to take necessary legal actions" against both Amin and Al-Akhbarfor slandering President Michel Sleiman.
Amin responded Tuesday with another piece ridiculing both Sleiman and Rifi which was quickly rebuffed by the ex-police chief over Twitter.
The conflict arose after the publication of Amin’s piece titled “Lebanon Without a President,” in which the newspaper chief accused Sleiman of “moral treason.” Amin has repeatedly attacked Sleiman after he called for disarming Hezbollah late last year.
In the article, Amin also called for an early election to choose a new president who embraces Lebanon’s Resistance as a national mandate.

Sleiman brings Lebanon “shame that will follow us everywhere,” Amin wrote, adding that “keeping his portrait hung on the walls of public offices is an insult to all the Lebanese injured, kidnapped and martyred.”
“Michel Suleiman, if you have any of your modesty left, leave.”
In a statement, Rifi said the article "instigates disobedience and abuse of the military and security institutions."
Amin’s piece included "scornful phrases that insulted and defamed President Michel Suleiman by accusing him of betrayal and dishonesty," Rifi wrote.
He also said that "offending the dignity of the president of the republic ... has nothing to do with freedom of speech guaranteed by the constitution and the law.”
Amin hit back Tuesday: “Today we have Michel Sleiman, who is impersonating the president, and Ashraf Rifi, who is impersonating the Minister of Justice. Tomorrow we might face … the Court of Publications, which is becoming more like a mock court which serves the authorities of death and oppression.”
He then scorned Sleiman for a brief scandal in which he and his family were caught with fake French passports in 2004. Amin then challenged Sleiman for not taking responsibility for the deaths of dozens of soldiers killed in Denniyeh in 2000 during a battle with Salafi gunmen.
Amin then attacks Rifi, the "militia leader in Tripoli," who backs armed gangs.
“Will you, General Ashraf Rifi, tell us the story of how you did not take orders from the Minister of Interior and did what you thought was appropriate, then bluntly accuse us of ‘instigating disobedience?’ Will you do what your fellow officers did, and give us a detailed account of how you spent your secret expenditures?”
Amin concluded: “We at Al-Akhbar do not fear any of you for one main reason: You do not know the meaning of real dignity. Your arms haven't hugged a martyr’s body and you haven't heard the gasps of a mother running to receive her son who fights in the Resistance. You haven't had the chance to breathe in pure air that does not contain the poison of an enemy or a traitor.”
“Take your best shot,” Amin added.
Rifi responded to Tuesday’s article in a tweet: "The time for debauchery and insulting has come to an end, and we will build a state where everyone is under the law."

Syrian Army Choppers Join Yabroud Battle

Syrian chopperSyrian army has stepped up its operations in the strategic town of Yabroud in rural Damascus which opposition militants believe it is the last base for a possible attack against the capital.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday that army helicopters launched a major operation over militant bases near Yabroud, which lies on the strategic highway linking Damascus to Homs.
Army units have also destroyed a number of cars equipped with machineguns, leaving all terrorists inside them in Yabroud killed, a military source told SANA news agency.
On Sunday the army said it was in full control of the Sahel village, which was an important base for the militants near Yabroud.
Also on Sunday, al- Kuwaiti strategic hill – overlooking the whole area – has been restored by the national military.
The militants occupying the town belong to the so-called Free Syrian Army, al-Qaeda’s al-Nusra Front, Islamic Front and a few from the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
SANA reported that army units have destroyed terrorists’ hideouts in the vicinity of Aleppo central prison, Hilan, al-Jbaileh, al-Kholandi oil station, Kwairis, Erbid, al-Jadideh, Heritan, Diman, Sada’aya, Bustan al-Qaser and al-Mislmiyeh in Aleppo countryside.
A number of terrorists have been also killed and others injured in the industrial city and Sheikh Najjar.
SANA sources added that an army unit foiled an infiltration attempt by terrorists towards al-Zebdiyeh in Aleppo city, inflicting heavy losses upon the terrorists.
In Daraa, the national military killed and injured all members of an armed terrorist group in the western part of Samlin village.
Syria was hit by a violent unrest since mid-March 2011, where the Syrian government accuses foreign actors, mainly the Saudi Arabia and Turkey, of orchestrating the conflict by supporting the militant opposition groups with arms and money.

Putin: What is going on in Ukraine is a coup, deploying military force is last resort, but we reserve right

Russia will not go to war with the people of Ukraine, but will use its troops to protect citizens, if radicals with clout in Kiev now try to use violence against Ukrainian civilians, particularly ethnic Russians, Putin told the media.
Putin, who was given a mandate by the Russian senate to use military force to protect civilians in Ukraine, said there is no need for such an action yet.
Putin cited the actions of radical activists in Ukraine, including the chaining of a governor to a stage as public humiliation and the killing of a technician during an opposition siege of the Party of Regions HQ, as justification for Russia to be concerned for the lives and well-being of people in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Incidents like those are why Russia reserves the option of troop deployment on the table.
“If we see this lawlessness starting in eastern regions, if the people ask us for help – in addition to a plea from a legitimate president, which we already have – then we reserve the right to use all the means we possess to protect those citizens. And we consider it quite legitimate,” he said.
Russia is not planning to go to war with the Ukrainian people, Putin stressed, when a journalist asked if he was afraid of war. But Russian troops would prevent any attempts to target Ukrainian civilians, should they be deployed.
“We are not going to a war against the Ukrainian people,” he said. “I want you to understand it unambiguously. If we do take a decision, it would only be to protect Ukrainian citizens. Let anybody in the military dare, and they’d be shooting their own people, who would stand up in front of us. Shoot at women and children. I’d like to see anyone try and order such a thing in Ukraine.”
Putin dismissed the notion that the uniformed armed people without insignia who are currently present in Crimea are Russian soldiers. He said they are members of the Crimean self-defense forces and that they are no better equipped and trained than some radical fighters who took part in the ousting of Yanukovich.
He assured that the surprise military drills in Russia’s west which ended on Tuesday had nothing to do with the Ukrainian situation.

        Sanction threats are counterproductive

Asked about criticism of Russia over its stance on Ukraine, Putin dismissed the accusations that Russia is acting illegitimately. He stated that even if Russia does use force in Ukraine, it would not violate international law.
At the same time he accused the United States and its allies of having no regard to legitimacy when they use military force in pursuit of their own national interests.
“When I ask them ‘Do you believe you do everything legitimately,’ they say ‘Yes.’ And I have to remind them about the US actions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, where they acted either without any UN Security Council mandate or through perverting a mandate, as was the case in Libya,” Putin said.
Our partners, especially in the United States, always clearly formulate for themselves their geopolitical and national interests, pursue them relentlessly and then drag the rest of the world in, using the principle ‘You are either with us or against us.' And harass those who refuse to be dragged in,” he added.
As for the sanctions Russia faces over Ukraine, Putin said those threatening them should think of the consequences to themselves if they follow that path. In an interconnected world a country may hurt another country if it wishes, but it would be damaged too.
Threats are counterproductive in this situation, Putin warned. He added that if G8 members choose not to go to Sochi for a planned G8 summit, that would be up to them.

Putin sympathies with Maidan protesters, rejects coup

Putin stressed that the Ukrainian people had a legitimate reason to protest against Yanukovich’s power, considering the overwhelming corruption and other faults of his presidency.
But he objected to the illegitimate way his ouster took place, because it undermined the political stability in the country.
“I strictly object to this form [of transition of power] in Ukraine, and anywhere in the post-Soviet space. This does not help nurturing a culture of law. If someone is allowed to act this way, then everyone is allowed to. And this means chaos. That’s the worst thing that can happen to a country with an unstable economy and an unestablished political system,” Putin explained.
He said that while he personally was not fond of months-long streets protests as a means to pressure the government, he sympathized with the Maidan demonstration members, who were genuinely outraged with the situation in Ukraine.
But at the same time he warned that what happens in Ukraine now may be a replacement of one group of crooks with another, citing the appointments of certain wealthy businessmen with questionable reputations.
Asked about the presence of snipers during the violent confrontation in Kiev last month, Putin said he was not aware of any order from the Yanukovich government to use firearms against the protesters. He alleged that the shooters could have been provocateurs from one of the opposition forces. He added that what he was sure of is the fact that police officers were shot at with lethal arms during the confrontation.
Yanukovich is certainly powerless in Ukraine, but legally speaking he is the legitimate president of the country, Putin said. The way the new authorities in Kiev replaced him did not enhance their credibility.
Asked if he felt for Yanukovich, Putin said “Oh, no. I have absolutely different feelings.” But he declined to publicly explain what those were. He also refrained from commenting on what mistakes he saw in Yanukovich’s actions, explaining that it would not be proper for him to do so.
At the same time Putin does not see any political future for Yanukovich, which he told the ousted Ukrainian president himself. He added that Russia allowed him to come to its territory for humanitarian reasons, because if he remained in Ukraine he could have been summarily executed.

Equal participation in Ukraine's future for all Ukrainians

The Russian government is currently engaging with the self-proclaimed govern of Ukraine with the goal of preserving economic ties between the two countries. However, any normal relations would only be possible after Ukraine has fully legitimate branches of government, Putin said. He considers that he has no counterpart in Kiev now, so he personally has no partner to communicate with.
The Russian president stressed that Russia wants to see equal participation of all citizens of Ukraine in defining the future of the country. The resistance to the authorities in Kiev, which is evident currently in the eastern and southern Ukraine, shows clearly that currently Kiev does not have a nationwide mandate to govern the country.
“Frankly, they should adopt a new constitution through a referendum so that all citizens of Ukraine feel engagement in that process, have an input on the formation of the new principles of how their nation should function,” Putin suggested. “That’s certainly not for us, but for the Ukrainians and the Ukrainian authorities to decide this way or another. I believe after legitimate government is formed, after a new president elected, after a new parliament is elected, they should return to this.”
Russia will be watching the planned presidential election in Ukraine, Putin said. If it is conducted in an atmosphere of terror, Russia will consider it unfair and will not recognize its results, he warned.
Putin commented on the issue of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, which Russia committed to preserve. He said that Western powers reject Russia’s assessment of the events in Ukraine as a coup and insist on calling it a revolution.
Some Russian experts, Putin warned that if Ukraine had undergone a revolution, then the nation that came out of it is not the same that it was before, similarly to how Russia transformed after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

If this is the case, Moscow may consider itself no longer bound by any treaties it has with Ukraine, Putin warned.
